FAQ

What is spray foam?

Spray foam (Spray Polyurethane Foam) or SPF is a mixture of two compounds (Resin & Isocyanate) that when mixed under temperature and pressure create a plastic. A blowing agent then creates bubbles in the mixture and expands the foam to 30 to 150 times its original volume. Depending on its cell structure we consider it either an open cell or closed cell foam.

How long will the foam last?

Correctly installed and not altered the foam will last the life of your building. SPF adheres extremely well to virtually all substrates and is able to flex and move with your building.

Where can spray foam insulation be used?

Spray foam has been used in almost any application that requires insulation from underground waterlines, hot tubs, foundations to metal roofs however, each foam has its applications and characteristics so although it is not recommended to use open cell foam FL-500 on the foundation the closed cell foam FL-2000 is the preferred method. The experts at PSI Foam will work with you to determine the correct foam to use in each application.

Can I spray the concrete walls in my basement?

Yes in fact PSI Foam recommends that you spray the outside walls prior to back filling. Concrete holds on to the temperature for a long time by stopping the cold from reaching the concrete you create a more comfortable environment. If it’s too late for the exterior spray foam is also the preferred method to insulate the crawlspace or basement as it will create a seamless thermal break.

Hello, we are thinking about attic insulation and building an attic room in our old house. Can you tell me, what are the benefits of foam insulation versus mineral wool insulation?

The indisputable advantage of foam insulation over the mineral or fiberglass insulation, is a seamless technology - a compact layer of thermal insulation. Even with a perfect installation of mats, or plates from MW thermal insulation leads to opening of joints, which cause thermal bridges and thus the place through which warm air escapes from the room, which is for obtain maximum thermal protection of the object completely undesirable.

I am interested in using foam FL-2000 as both waterproofing and thermal insulating layer for insulating the floor (concrete slab foundation). This year I start to build a house and considering the use of this material. Can you tell me what is the procedure work?

Yes, foam insulation FL-2000 may also be used for insulation of places where there is direct contact with water. As the foundation walls and concrete floors, etc. closed cell spray foam insulation does not absorb water which is allowing the application of FL-2000 to such cases.

You will need to use a mud slab and then after the CC foam is applied pour a secondary slab over it. Foam may be applied to the earth prior to the first slab removing the need or cost of the secondary slab, however you would put drainage in the grade and after the gravel bed is in place lay a geo-textile to spray onto. Insulating foam can be applied to almost any dry surface such as sand, gravel, etc. In the case of wet surface is necessary to use plastic, which subsequently sprayed foam insulation. Insulating foam FL-2000, few seconds after application foam is completely dry, and ready for other applications such as the installation of concrete slabs etc. FL-2000 density is 41.5 kg per m3 provides sufficient strength 2.11 Kg/cm2 for use under concrete.

I saw a competitive foam insulation company on TV and it occurred to me that there is a lot of over- spray foam waste. Does this mean that the customer is paying for that too?

The customer pays only for what he ordered. The amount of over-sprayed material which is cut off is not calculated in the price. Therefore, it is purely in our own interest to reduce the amount of over-sprayed material, but the technology of spray foam insulation does not allow to completely eliminate these over sprays.

Hello, this summer I’m planning the reconstruction of pitched roof coverings on a house. On that occasion I’m considering the use of spray foam insulation. It is possible to spray foam from above - i.e. to uncover the roof and remove the original blown insulation and replace it with foam insulation.

Yes, the installation of foam insulation can be also done from above.

What is the difference in the technical data between Honter foam and another spray foam manufactures?

Both are basically the same just from different manufacturers. All open-cell is like ours product FL-500, with an open structure suitable for indoor use only. But Honter Company is offering also FL-2000 which is closed-cell spray foam that is water resistant and therefore suitable for use outside and below the grade.
